Where Smith has stumbled in the past is by exercising poor political judgment. As leader of the Wildrose party during the 2012 election, Smith refused to boot a candidate who said gays and lesbians will burn in a “lake of fire.” While Smith’s core brand of personal liberty and defending Alberta’s resource industry is widely appealing, she at times allowed the loopier elements of her message to define her campaign.
