Researchers develop a new catalyst using copper nanoclusters to convert atmospheric CO2 into methane, providing a cleaner energy alternative.
The groundbreaking electrocatalysis technique uses renewable energy to convert CO2 into methane, creating a closed carbon loop that neutralizes emissions and offers a sustainable energy storage solution.Researchers at McGill University have created a groundbreaking catalyst that transforms carbon dioxide into methane, providing a cleaner and more sustainable energy source.
“On sunny days, you can use solar power, or when it’s a windy day, you can use that wind to produce renewable electricity, but as soon as you produce that electricity, you need to use it,” said Mahdi Salehi, a Ph.D. candidate at the Electrocatalysis Lab at McGill University. The team’s findings reveal that extremely small copper nanoclusters are exceptionally effective at producing methane.
This research has significant implications. It provides a way to turn CO2 into methane using renewable energy sources. This technology has two major benefits: reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating a sustainable way to store energy.

The price is wrong: Researchers explore farmers' interests in carbon marketsThe United States, along with 123 other countries, have pledged to reach 'net-zero' carbon emissions by 2050 or 2060. A number of strategies are being deployed to reach this ambitious goal, but the one most pertinent to South Dakota residents is the utilization of one of the state's most abundant natural resources: soil.

Carbon dioxide's heavy stamp on temperature: Doubling CO2 may mean 7 to 14 degree increaseA doubling of the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere could cause an increase in the average temperature on earth from 7 to even a maximum of 14 degrees. That is shown in the analysis of sediments from the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.
