SYDNEY — Caroline Miles was battering fish Sunday morning as she readied to open The Lord Fin on Sydney’s harbourfront boardwalk with post-tropical storm Lee making its breezy, but relatively banal presence felt. But it didn’t take much to keep the outer door propped open again to accommodate the inside screen door access — just a small anchor as Lee stayed true on expectations it wouldn’t bring mass havoc to a region still scarred from last fall’s post-tropical storm Fiona.

“We knew it wasn’t forecast to be as significant of a weather event for Cape Breton compared to western Nova Scotia, but the big difference that perhaps people expected and it didn't occur was that winds for most of Cape Breton were quite moderate throughout most of Saturday, and it wasn’t until Saturday night and Sunday morning where winds were strongest for most of the island,” SaltWire weather specialist Allister Aalders said Sunday of the impact on Cape Breton.

After Fiona hit, she lost siding, roofing and her baby barn as well as everything in it. Her car was also damaged. The pitch of the barn’s roof flew over her house and landed on the other side. She decided to open Sunday just in case the customers came as rain has dampened the waterfront trade some days this summer.

Power outages were sporadic around Cape Breton, including Lake Ainslie near Whycocomagh on Saturday, as well as Glace Bay, which had about 800 customers out for a time. There were also scattered outages near Sydney, New Waterford and Margaree Valley. Southwestern parts of the province — South Shore, Tri-County and Annapolis Valley — the Halifax Regional Municipality as well as Truro and New Glasgow in the northeast were hardest hit by the storm, Nova Scotia Power said. Winds reached over 100 km/hour in most of the west and the northeast area of the province and over 120 km/hour in parts of Halifax Regional Municipality.

Most businesses in southwestern Nova Scotia had remained closed on Saturday, which cut down on the amount of traffic. Ferries and bridges were also affected Saturday, such as the MacDonald and MacKay bridges in the HRM, which were closed to high-sided vehicles and buses at the time.
