PORT HAWKESBURY — The 43rd annual Tiger Mackie Oldtimer's Hockey Tournament will take place in Port Hawkesbury this weekend after a two-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.There will be five teams in the over-35 division including 2020 champion Antigonish Old Dogs, who look to win the Bill Hood Cup. There are eight teams in the under-35 event who will be competing to take home the Greg MacRae Cup.
Mackie, who tried out for the NHL's Boston Bruins in 1935 but failed to make the team, played professional hockey in Pittsburgh, Detroit, Quebec and Glace Bay before returning to his adopted home of Port Hawkesbury to play locally. He played hockey well into his 80s and died at the age of 89 in Port Hawkesbury in 2003. He was inducted into the Port Hawkesbury Sports Wall of Fame as a builder for his work in the creation of the area's first hockey rink.@CBPost_JeremyIt has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
