Cape Breton Eagles left winger Jacob Newcombe has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a team statement said Monday. A seventh-round pick by the Chicoutimi Saguenéens in 2020, Newcombe earned his spot on the Quebec-based team as a 17-year-old during the 2021-22 season, posting 14 goals and 36 points in 66 games with the team. Despite being a key player in the Chicoutimi lineup, the team traded him to the Eagles in December in a deal which sent 16-year-old first-round pick Thomas Desruisseaux to the Saguenéens.“Jacob is an integral part of our team and our family,” Eagles general manager Sylvain Couturier said in a statement. “His strength and determination on the ice are inspiring, and we have no doubt that he will approach this battle with the same level of resolve.
