Canlaon City authorities are taking proactive measures to prepare residents for a possible Alert Level 4 due to intensified volcanic activity at Mount Kanlaon. The city government is implementing evacuation strategies, public education campaigns, and a comprehensive response plan to mitigate the impact of a potential eruption.

In light of the escalating threat posed by Mount Kanlaon , Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas, and the Canlaon City government are taking immediate and decisive measures to prepare residents for a possible Alert Level 4, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said on Sunday. As volcanic activity intensifies, the local government unit (LGU) is prioritizing the safety of the community through proactive evacuation strategies and public education.

It implemented a comprehensive response plan aimed at mitigating the impact of volcanic activity.A key component of this initiative is the intensified outreach to internally displaced persons (IDPs) sheltered outside designated evacuation centers, ensuring their preparedness for any potential emergencies, the OCD reported. Family preparedness was highlighted as a crucial element. Households were advised to be ready with emergency kits and facilitate discussions at home to ensure that all family members are fully cognizant of the evacuation procedures. Camp managers were updated of danger zones. Residents were being relocated to safer and more suitable locations, as one of the camps was deemed logistically unsuitable for evacuation in the event of an Alert Level 4 declaration. Continuous monitoring of safety zones has been implemented to prevent residents from returning to hazardous areas during Alert Level 3, thereby minimizing their exposure to volcanic hazards. Comprehensive ocular inspections are currently underway in Guihulngan and Ayungon to serve as new potential sites for the evacuation of residents from Canlaon City, according to the OCD. Ocular inspections are also ongoing in La Libertad. Canlaon City formalized these collaborations through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with neighboring localities—Vallehermoso, Guihulngan City, La Libertad, and Ayungon—designated as potential evacuation sites. Authorities are also implementing a simultaneous warning system in collaboration with national agencies. This system will ensure that all residents receive timely alerts, enabling them to respond promptly to the volcano’s activity
