The object was downed by an American fighter jet Saturday from the Prime Minister and U.S. President Joe Biden
A Canadian team is working to retrieve and analyze an as-yet unidentified object shot down over Yukon on Saturday, Prime Minster Justin Trudeau said Sunday.
“The safety of Canadians is our number one priority, and that is why I made the decision to shoot down the object,” Mr. Trudeau said. “It was a threat to civil aviation and a potential threat to Canadians.” As part of a previously scheduled trip to Whitehorse, Mr. Trudeau said he will be meeting later Sunday with indigenous leaders, including those from the area where the debris from the object would have landed. He will meet tomorrow with Yukon premier Ranj Pilla.
Mr. Trudeau said he had spoken with Mr. Biden, and that “Canadian Forces will now recover and analyze the wreckage of the object.” The Pentagon said NORAD first discovered the object over Alaska Friday, tracking it with two F-22s. Canadian fighter jets joined the formation Saturday after the aircraft crossed the international border. The U.S. Department of Defence said the RCMP and FBI would be working together to further investigate the object once the debris is recovered.
