Mastectomies are meant to alleviate chest dysphoria from unwanted breasts. A parents\u0027 group wants the surgeries banned in minors.
“We seem to have bought into, as a culture, this idea that you can be who you want to be, identify however you want and change your body to suit how you want to identify, and that all this is going to work out wonderfully,” said Pamela Buffone, founder of the Canadian Gender Report.
Many clinics and surgeons the National Post reached out to also did not respond to questions about age cut-offs, or the proportion of top surgeries being performed in minors. Others said they had no one available to comment. Across the U.S, hospitals and their staff have been subjected to threats and harassment for providing gender-affirming care.
According to the Canadian Paediatric Society’s recent position statement on gender-affirming care, “some children may recognize a degree of mismatch between their gender identity and their assigned sex” as early as age two or three. When asked how many bilateral mastectomies were performed in minors, Trans Care BC said the information wasn’t available. Regarding any minimum age requirement, “this is a surgeon and patient decision. Trans Care BC isn’t involved in determining the surgeon’s clinical decisions.”
Mental health can be tangled up in gender distress, Buffone, founder of the Canadian Gender Report, said. Transgender youth show higher rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, eating disorders and autism spectrum disorders.to gender-affirming care has also been associated with higher risks of anxiety, depression and attempted or completed suicide, according to WPATH.
Values and preferences are always important, “but they become paramount under such circumstances,” Guyatt said. “If they are making a considered decision to go ahead with this, that would seem to be totally appropriate. The key is to acknowledge the low-quality evidence, and the implications of the low-quality evidence.”
