Canadian speed skater Gelinas-Beaulieu gets past health issues, earns special medal in Calgary yyc
On Sunday afternoon at the Olympic Oval, Gelinas-Beaulieu took the bronze in the men’s 1,000 metres, just behind teammate Laurent Dubreuil and Dutch winner Hein Otterspeer.
Otterspeer’s winning time was 1.07.28, just .02 quicker than Dubreuil, who was just .02 faster than Gelinas-Beaulieu. “I certainly wish it was two or three-hundredths faster and a different colour medal,” the Quebec City skater said with a smile. “I executed perfectly my race plan. I felt I hung on pretty good at the end.”
“It’s like a love-hate relationship with the distance. I’m happy after I’ve done it but in the 10 minutes leading up to it, I hate my life for signing up for it.
