In a bid to prevent damaging tariffs, Canada's premiers are uniting in Washington to lobby President Trump.
Canadian premiers are heading to Washington this week on a joint mission to persuade U.S. President Donald Trump to abandon his tariff threats. The Council of the Federation, comprising all 13 provincial and territorial premiers, is taking this diplomatic initiative after Trump recently paused his plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, including a 10 percent levy on Canadian energy.
Trump initially delayed these tariffs until at least March 12 in response to border security commitments from both nations. However, on Monday, Trump announced that he will implement a 25 percent tariff on all aluminum and steel imports to the U.S. starting March 12, with no exemptions. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who chairs the Council of the Federation, will address the U.S. Chamber of Commerce today, emphasizing that Canada has taken steps to secure its borders and that collaboration is mutually beneficial. Other premiers will join the Washington mission on Wednesday.Ford intends to convey to Republican lawmakers and business groups that Canada has made efforts to safeguard its borders and that a strong partnership between the two countries is in their best interest. This high-level diplomatic push aims to avert potential damage to the Canadian economy and maintain the close trade ties between Canada and the U.S.
