Nearly one year since Russia first invaded, sources say Canada has an opportunity to bring justice to Ukrainians by helping establish a special tribunal on crimes of aggression.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy leads a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council in Kyiv, Ukraine, on Sept. 30, 2022. Zelenskyy has called for allies to help the country establish a special tribunal on crimes of aggression.

“We’re all in,” Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly told media at a training facility in Ukraine. “We will continue to help Ukraine by providing weapons, humanitarian help and financial assistance.” Her message of reassurance, delivered on Wednesday, comes nearly one year after Russian military forces invaded Ukraine. And still, bearing the scars of past and present airstrikes, artillery fire and missiles, the war-torn country remains a round-the-clock target for Vladimir Putin and his authoritarian regime.

To date, the federal government has provided more than $1 billion in military aid, $320 million in humanitarian aid, $96 million in development assistance and more than $68 million in security and stabilization programming.
