Canada’s military is tracking what it says is a high-altitude surveillance balloon that may be a twin to a Chinese balloon being monitored by the Pentagon in the United States.
Canada’s military is tracking what it says is a high-altitude surveillance balloon after the Pentagon said a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon was being monitored over U.S. airspace this week.
Though it did not say where the balloon was spotted, DND said it was co-ordinating with the Canadian Armed Forces and NORAD, which was actively tracking the balloon. DND has not said whether the balloon flew over Canadian airspace. The U.S. confirmed Thursday that it had been tracking a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon spotted in its airspace for the past two days. Officials said although fighter jets were readied, the Pentagon decided not to shoot down the balloon for fear of harming people on the ground.A senior American defence official told Pentagon reporters Thursday the U.S. has “very high confidence” that the balloon was a Chinese high-altitude balloon flying over sensitive sites to collect information.
It was spotted over Montana, which is home to one of the nation’s three nuclear missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information.
