The Canadian Heraldic Authority says the emblem is a tribute to inclusion, Indigenous peoples, equity, the natural world and togetherness.
Thus, the only Canadian addition is the 13 triangles; the number being representative of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories. The shape is supposed to denote “pennants arrayed for a celebration.”
Ive’s emblem was a from-scratch floral design that used the natural flora of the United Kingdom to form the shape of a crown. It wasn’t until 1989 that an order by Queen Elizabeth II allowed Canada to design its own in-house heraldry. Until then, any badges or coats of arms had to be approved via the London-based College of Arms.Article content
