When asked about Canada’s inability to propose proportional funding to the U.S.’s recent bill, Marie-Claude Bibeau said the comparison is short-sighted.Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Marie-Claude Bibeau rises during Question Period in the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Thursday, March 30, 2023.
Canada’s minister of agriculture and agri-food says she isn’t worried this year’s federal budget doesn’t offer comparable agri-environmental investments to the U.S.’s Inflation Reduction Act’s because Canada’s public purse has backstopped climate-friendly farming practices for a number of years now.Marie-Claude Bibeau said it would be short-sighted to just compare Canada and U.S.’s most recent budgets.
“When we started to make investments, the U.S. still had Trump in government who was doing nothing and denying climate change,” she said, noting the last four Canadian federal budgets have amounted $160 billion in environmental programming.
