The FIFA World Cup comes around every four years, and for the Canadian men’s national team, it was a 36\u002Dyear wait between appearances.
We apologize, but this video has failed to load.“I think tomorrow is a real opportunity for our players and for our country to keep stepping forward,” Herdman said. “As a group, we’ve tactically and with our identity, took some big steps in this tournament. I think football people that were waiting for Canada to arrive were wondering how we were going to show up, and we showed up on the front foot and that will be our approach again.
Yet, internally, after finishing first in Concacaf qualifying for the first time in history, expectations were high. Canada did score a goal in the 4-1 loss, although overwhelmed by the emotionally charged Croatia, who took personally Herdman’s words in a post-game huddle after the loss to Belgium and used it as motivation.
There will still be excitement in the final game back home and watch parties will likely be set up a schools, but it won’t be like the first two games were, where there was so much on the line. Canada took a long road to get here — longest of any other team at the tournament — having to play preliminary qualifying games to get into the final Concacaf eight-team group. The game against Morocco will represent the end of the journey with a number of veterans expected to move on and make way for the next generation.
The England-born Herdman is the only manager here to coach both a women’s and a men’s team to its respective World Cups.“I will be tomorrow; I will be excited tomorrow, absolutely, absolutely,” Herdman said. “Eleven years of work in this country and I have been pioneering for a long period of time, and you’ll not find anyone as passionate as I am about this program, or about these players or about this staff.
