In response to Bill C-18, Meta and Google have said they will remove news by Canadian journalism outlets from their sites before the law comes into force

TORONTO — Meta and Google's move away from linking to Canadian news sites is a "moment of reckoning" for publishers and broadcasters that have heavily relied on social media to build audiences, marketing and journalism experts say.

In response to the act known as Bill C-18, Meta and Google have said they will remove news by Canadian journalism outlets from their sites before the law comes into force. "There is no greater proof of the critical need for this law at this time than the actions taken upon its passing," said Andrew MacLeod, the company's CEO, in a news release.

News companies have long relied on subscribers, viewers and advertisers to deliver revenues, but in recent years have watched each of those sources decrease. News Media Canada added that advertising revenue for community newspapers in the country dropped to $411 million in 2020 from $1.21 billion in 2011. Over that span, almost 300 papers either disappeared or merged with other publications.
