Canadian farm groups say Ottawa must invest in a national vaccine bank if it wants to ensure the agriculture sector is prepared for a foot and mouth outbreak. If unprepared, the economy could face $65 billion in losses from this highly contagious virus.
Foot and mouth disease could cause a $65-billion loss to Canada’s economy if an outbreak hits the agriculture sector.Cows wait to be fed at Nicomekl Farms in Surrey, B.C. Many producers across the country are concerned Canada isn’t prepared for a foot and mouth disease outbreak, which Indonesia is currently facing.
To save the agriculture sector from an outbreak of a highly contagious virus that would result in catastrophic losses, Ottawa should develop a national vaccine bank, say Canadian farm groups. That virus, known as foot and mouth disease , causes severe illness in cloven-hoofed livestock and wildlife like cattle, pigs, goats, wild boar, sheep, bison, elk and deer. When populations catch the virus, it causes fever and blisters that rupture in the mouth and on the skin of the udder and feet.
Though Canada has access to a shared vaccine bank with the U.S. and Mexico, Canadian beef, pork and dairy producers say the 330,000 doses they’re entitled to is merely a fraction of what they need to be prepared for an outbreak. A national vaccine bank, they argue, would provide the sector with sufficient supply to create a “firebreak” of vaccinated cattle, slowing the spread of an outbreak so cases could be tracked, contained and eliminated quickly as possible.
