No parades, plenty of livestreams: Canadians honour King Charles III’s coronation quietly, if at all
was marked by government officials and pockets of early risers across Canada on Saturday, with gatherings, parties and words of praise for the monarchy.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Gov. Gen Mary Simon were among the dignitaries attending the coronation ceremony at London’s Westminster Abbey on Saturday. Although some people across Canada marked the occasion with warmth, the celebrations were more muted than those that greetedIn 1953, a crowd of 150,000 swept the streets of Toronto ready to celebrate the last coronation some thought they would see in their lifetimes by attending a parade and religious services held across the city.
The throngs that lined the streets then were not to be found Saturday as many decided to sleep in or watch the events from the comfort of their couches at home. In Victoria, B.C., the 144-year-old Union Club hosted about 30 people gathered in the neo-Georgia-style building’s stately reading room, making themselves comfortable sitting on green leather couches and watching the ceremony on a big screen. Canadian flags, Union Jacks were on display throughout the room and coffee, tea and breakfast was available.
Otto said despite King Charles’s age, he has been embracing modern ideas for years, including environmentalism, heritage preservation and gardening.Many government buildings were illuminated in emerald green to honour the occasion and the king. More official events will be held around the country to commemorate the coronation later in the month.
