Ernest Manning, Alberta’s bespeckled premier for 25 years from 1943 to 1968, was a conservative populist who moved his Social Credit party away from its “funny money” giveaway schemes when oil and gas discoveries set the province on the path to low taxes and energy prosperity. His son Preston Manning, who led the deficit-adverse, social conservative Reform Party, did not wear glasses in public.
In the 1993 election, two conservative offshoot parties, Reform in the West, and the Bloc Québécois in Quebec, reduced the two-term majority government won by Brian Mulroney’s Progressive Conservatives to two MPs.
