CAMPUS PREVIEW: Dinos hockey men home to try and extend record winning run yyc

Coming off a successful Crowchild Classic weekend that saw the No. 1-ranked Dinos sweep the No. 5 Mount Royal Cougars, the Dinos get a lesser-light in the Bisons in a pair of home games at Father David Bauer Arena. The Calgary squad eclipsed the previous Canada West record of 17 consecutive wins, originally set by the Alberta Golden Bears during the 1978-79 season, with their 18th and 19th victories against their crosstown rival Mount Royal.

The Bisons defeated the Trinity Western Spartans last weekend after a marathon game saw Manitoba’s Devon Skoleski score the game-winner, pushing the Bisons past the Spartans for a 7-6 victory. Skoleski has racked up 26 points this season and sits second behind teammate Brett Davis with a total of 29 points in 11 goals and 18 assists. On the Dinos front, Riley Stotts leads with 32 points with seven goals and an impressive 25 assists.

After an incredibly strong start to the season, the Dinos hit a speed bump coming out of the winter break. The team looks to have turned a corner, however, after a dominant showing last time out. Calgary travelled to Manitoba Jan. 20-21 and completed the weekend sweep of the Brandon Bobcats, including a 25-16, 25-15, 25-7 in the finale.Article content

This weekend marks the first time the Dinos and the Thunderbirds will square off in a conference game since all the way back in Nov. of 2019. The two teams also met in the post-season last year, with UBC claiming that round-of-six competition from Mount Royal’s Kenyon Court. The two teams have been very balanced over the last little while, splitting the head-to-head series in conference and post-season action over the last eight games.

UBC sits just one spot ahead of Calgary in the Canada West standings. The top eight teams in the 13-team conference will make the post-season tournament, which begins Feb. 24. Currently, Calgary sits in a tie with Thompson Rivers for seventh place and is one game up on the current ninth-place-squad Manitoba.
