Starting on United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the campaign ends Dec. 10.

“With the exception of a few, there has been nothing but silence from the political leaders, the humanitarians and gender equity initiatives,” Alagheband told the Ottawa crowd. “I am here to call you out on your silence, which has been devastating and numbing.” The same Statistics Canada report said that seven out of 10 female homicide victims last year were killed by spouses, partners or family members: a percentage that has remained consistent during the past decade.
