Camp rules: Origin shake-up looms to stop NRL mid-season drain

The NRL has taken its biggest step to changing the way NSW and Queensland prepare for Origin matches after aggressive lobbying from clubs.

The NRL has taken its biggest step towards revamping the State of Origin series, with camps slashed to just seven days in a bid to ease the toll on clubs who provide the biggest stars.

The process frustrated some club bosses who argued players didn’t need to spend such a long time in camp, especially given the first two days were largely devoted to promotional activities and team bonding with only light training. “Clubs have requested the shortening of Origin camps,” an NRL spokesperson said on Thursday. “We are consulting with all stakeholders and the Commission will consider the issue at the end of the season.”
