Embattled Senator David Van is under pressure to quit politics all together as a senior Nationals figure praises Lidia Thorpe for using parliamentary privilege to air her allegations.
Senator Van was embroiled in controversy after Senator Lidia Thorpe accused him of sexual harassment during two emotional statements on the floor of parliament.
The Nationals leader joined his Coalition counterpart on Sunday, arguing Senator Van should vacate his Senate seat given he no longer sat with the Liberal Party. On Thursday, former Liberal senator Amanda Stoker also revealed Senator Van had groped her twice at a party in Parliament House in 2020. “I cannot remain a member of a party that tramples upon the very premise on which our justice system is predicated,” he said in a statement on Saturday. In a fiery display on Wednesday night, Senator Thorpe said her then-Liberal colleague had “harassed me, sexually assaulted me” – an accusation Senator Van vehemently denied.
But Senator Thorpe received support from a political opponent in Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie who praised the use of parliamentary privilege.
