The new push by the Australia’s leading teacher’s union, suggests the tests be brought into Australian schools from next year in a bid to lower student’s risks of contracting long COVID.For more Coronavirus related news and videos check outNot only would the rapid antigen tests be introduced, but the reporting of each test would also be mandated under the Australian Teacher’s Union’s proposal.
In their submission to a federal parliamentary inquiry into long COVID, the union accused the government of showing a “lack of concern” for the wellbeing of students and said it had fears of long COVID spreading in schools.Infectious diseases expert Paul Griffin said the rapid antigen testing of asymptomatic students in schools would be expensive, unreliable and give false reassurances.
Despite most Australians having increased immunity from vaccines and previously having had the virus, Griffin noted infections could still have severe implications.Vaccinations and booster shots need to be up-to-date, he said.
