The Victorian Labor government is being pushed to outlaw machetes in the wake of several violent assaults involving the weapon.

Knife violence has skyrocketed since the pandemic, with 32 youths requiring hospital treatment for knife assaults in the 2018-19 financial year. That came after Pa Sawm Lyhym, 16, was fatally stabbed in the neck during an alleged altercation between two groups near Sunshine train station in broad daylight on May 18.

The teen was driven to Springvale for the sale but as he arrived two men wearing black hoods concealing their faces approached him with machetes.More recently, a group of youths set upon a teenager with a machete during a busy period at St Albans train station.
