Love was feted Monday as winner of the Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award, the American Hockey League’s coach of the year trophy. He is just the third bench boss in AHL history to collect that honour in back-to-back campaigns, and the first to do so in his first two seasons on the minor-league loop.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.
The 38-year-old Love is considered a rising star in the coaching business. He guided the Wranglers this season to a 51-17-4 mark, the best-ever record for the Flames’ farm team. After claiming top seed in the Pacific Division, they have a bye in the opening round of the playoffs. “A lot of people put in a lot of heavy lifting around here,” Love said, heaping praise on his skaters and staff. “Of course, I’m the head coach so I try to lead as best I can with everybody and where they need to go. But I’m really fortunate to have good people around me and they support me on a daily basis. And then the amount of work that our players put in, that’s what it’s all about.”
