Calgary's ChamberFest West, to 'resonate' throughout the city again yyc yycmusic
The festival runs from July 19 to 23 and features 22 musicians from around the globe and a program that offers everything from Beethoven, Ravel and Mendelssohn to Canadian composer Dinuk Wijeratne’s Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems and a new song cycle by American Michael Stephen Brown, which was inspired by Schumann and dedicated to and performed by soprano Susanna Phillips.
It will also end at the Bella Concert Hall on July 23 with If Music Be the Food of Love, which will feature pieces by Mozart, Schumann and Brown’s song cycle, “Loves Lives Lost.” “It’s kind of a small group at the very top of the classical music world,” says Cohen. “A lot of them are friends, have played with each other before. But none of them play with each other on a daily basis. This particular group will be coming together for the first time. That’s one of the beautiful things about this setup; you have so many fascinating personalities. Some of whom know each other, some of whom don’t. New friendships are made, really close bonds are made through music.
