Calgary Roughnecks goalie Christian Del Bianco makes history with take of NLL MVP award yyc
“First off, on behalf of the Calgary Roughnecks, I would like to congratulate Christian on being selected the MVP of the National Lacrosse League,” Roughnecks head coach Curt Malawsky said. “It is an enormous honour to be recognized by the wide spectrum of voters throughout the league who cast ballots, including coaches, general managers, governors and media.
He is the fourth Riggers player to win the MVP and the first since Dane Dobbie in 2019. The Roughnecks goalie recorded 19 assists on the season — 10 more than second-place Warren Hill, of the Halifax Thunderbirds — to help spur the dangerous transition game from the Roughnecks. He becomes just the second goaltender to ever win the top player honour — Steve Dietrich did it in 2006 — and the third non-forward to win the award since its inception in 1994. Along with winning the MVP award, Del Bianco has been named to the NLL’s 2022-23 first all-league team alongside teammate Zach Currier, the 2021-22 and 2022-23 NLL Transition Player of the Year.
