Calgary police to evaluate downtown impact as Alberta Sheriffs pilot ends yyc
in an effort to deter crime in problem spots throughout downtown, including on the transit system, amid continued concerns over safety and violence in the city. A nearly identical pilot was completed in Edmonton.
While additional law enforcement was needed downtown, it’s not a silver-bullet solution to public-safety worries, said Calgary Downtown Association executive director Mark Garner. “Did they actually get the results that we wanted, or was it just an increased visibility to deter certain behaviour? Was it strong enforcement to get the criminal element that are preying on the most vulnerable in our community?” Garner said.Advertisement 5Garner said he believes governments aren’t doing enough collectively to find and fund solutions to disorder and safety problems downtown.
