Calgary Folk Fest: Ondara brings ambitious third album to main stage yyc yycmusic
“I wasn’t consciously thinking of a physical character when I was writing the songs, although there is always some kind of subconscious voice in my creative process,” he says. “I think what happened was that later on I gave that voice a name and narrative and brought it to life in a physical sense. I think there are parts of me in the character, certainly. But it wasn’t autobiographical in that sense. It was just stream-of-consciousness.
“The American empire does very good PR,” he says. “If you’re outside of America, I think it’s very easy to have an idealized version of America and I think a lot of immigrants that move to America typically have this romantic idea of what America is. After spending some time, that gets knocked out your head rather promptly.”Article contentSonically, Spanish Villager No. 3 is Ondara’s most expansive album to date.
