Mayr has described it as her background novel for nearly two decades, an ambitious period piece that delves into racism and homophobia and required years of deep research. It is her sixth novel. The Giller jurors praised Mayr for rendering a work of historical fiction “alive and immediate — and eerily contemporary.
The awards ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto was hosted by poet Rupi Kaur and actor Sarah Gadon.
to win the honour. Calgary-born Esi Edugyan has won twice, first for her 2011 novel Half-Blood Blues and again in 2018 for Washington Black. Calgary’s Will Ferguson won the award in 2012 for his novel 419.
