Dozens of speakers made their voices heard to Calgary councillors on Thursday, during the first of a two\u002Dday public hearing about the city\u0027s proposed housing strategy.

She believes having a three-month-old daughter, coupled with a lack of credit history, were the reasons her applications were unsuccessful.

Snizhana Bora, who recently arrived in Calgary from Ukraine, shows emotion after speaking to city council during the first day of discussion at city hall regarding affordable housing.Another speaker on Thursday was Inam Teja, who works as a policy and advocacy specialist for the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Despite boasting a master’s degree in public policy and a well-paying job, he said he lives in his parents’ basement because of the housing affordability crisis.

Teja, 27, told the committee he recently returned to Calgary after a few years in the U.K. obtaining his master’s degree, only to realize his only chance of saving to buy a house was to live with his parents.
