Out\u002Dof\u002Dcontrol wildfires burning on both sides of Okanagan Lake have razed multiple properties, displaced thousands of residents and disrupted travel plans for many Albertans.
“We saw their houses getting burned. We saw them running away with all of their closest possessions. It just felt surreal in that sense,” said Sell. “We’re out here for vacation and we’re affected in a small sense, but it’s nothing compared to the people who are actually having to their lives changed because of this.”Former Edmontonian Gary Gylytiuk is among the remaining West Kelowna residents currently not impacted by an evacuation order or alert.
Gylytiuk noted an “eerie quiet” as he drove back south along the typically busy Highway 97 through Kelowna. In his decade and a half in the Okanagan, Gylitiuk has seen fires, floods and other disasters, but he said he’s never seen anything this severe hit the region. The Kelowna International Airport — the 10th busiest airport in Canada — suspended all flights in and out of the city Friday.
