Captain Liam Wright is in doubt for the second Wallabies Test against Wales, opening up new roles for Charlie Cale and James Slipper.
Sydney-raised Brumbies back-rower Charlie Cale is in line for a starting debut for the Wallabies against Wales in Melbourne, with skipper Liam Wright in serious doubt due to a shoulder injury.at Allianz Stadium at the weekend, returning after a five-year absence from the Test arena.
Veteran prop James Slipper is the frontrunner to step up and captain the team, while Allan Alaalatoa – the man who became captain after Wright left the field on Saturday – will remain a second-half weapon on the bench. This year Cale has emerged as a genuine star for the Brumbies, having taken over the role of wide-running back-rower from Pete Samu. Showing incredible pace for a big man, Cale scored several tries for the Brumbies where he outsprinted wingers to touch down.
Williams and Wainwright have 141 caps between them, and the other 13 players in Wales’ starting side have a combined 180 appearances.“We are waiting for a further assessment,” Wales assistant coach Rob Howley said of Wainwright’s leg injury.
