Mandatory yearly anti-racism training for Calgary city council is in the works, pending council’s approval of a couple of bylaw tweaks.

Terry Wong.
The proposed amendments would also firm up code of conduct provisions around how members of council are to communicate with city staff and the public. The wording tweak would mandate that elected officials “treat” staff and the public with respect rather than the current stipulation that they “communicate” that way.
Another result of the 2020 resolution was the creation of the city’s anti-racism strategy, which council voted to adopt in May as a guiding document for the city to“Myself being a visible minority on council — I will say this council is generally well behaved with respect to their colleagues and administration. I don’t see the challenges that other jurisdictions may see,” Wong said.
