The lake in the heart of Venezuela’s oil territory is coated with slimy crude and neon green algae. Now fishers, scientists, local people and even human hair are being deployed to clean it up

rmed with picks and shovels, 20 anglers slowly arrive at the shore of Lake Maracaibo with the sun’s first light. Their mission is not to fish, as their ancestors have done, but to try to rescue. Wielding metal rakes, they enter the water and remove the sticky black layer that blankets the surface of one of the world’s largest and most ancient lakes.appears as a droplet shape, with a greenish hue that contrasts with the deep blue typical of vast waters.

Ender Bermúdez, a fisher hired to clean crude oil from the shore, points to a nearby shrimp feed factory that pollutes the area“It’s everywhere. When we go deep in the lake and pick up our nets, they are fully covered in oil from the bottom of the lake,” says Ender Bermúdez, a 56-year-old fisher. He said fishers have faced tough times as they haven’t been able to fish because of the pollution. “If we don’t have the lake, we don’t have a single coin in our pockets.

The ministry has audited more than 75 businesses, including shrimp farms and other companies in industrial zones, ensuring their compliance with environmental standards. Those that did not comply were closed. Of the 23 water treatment facilities, only one was functional, albeit at reduced capacity.

“We want to make a citizen call to action, to discuss the issues and add visibility to the problem of oil spills,” she says from a laboratory at the University of Zulia, where the absorption devices are tested.
