Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says the Albanese government’s carbon tax proposal will mean costs will pass from businesses onto the consumer, including “increases in electricity prices” at a time when families cannot afford it.

“He promised before the election he had a plan, he promised on 97 occasions that he’ll reduce power prices by $275, it just hasn’t happened,” Mr Dutton told a press conference on Monday.

“We’re seeing at the moment a lot of decisions which will contribute to an upward pressure on interest rates at a time when families can least afford that.”

Mr Clennell said the Liberals “are yet to select a candidate for the seat”, with a selection likely to be made in the next 24 hours.

She said the government will “offer them pathways to permanent residency”. “Every single one of them paid a people smuggler a fortune to push their way into Australia,” she said. “The government also scrapped ministerial directions that placed restrictions on the ability of people who illegally arrived in Australia by boat to make applications for family reunion visas.”
