A coalition of 10 major Philippine business organizations has voiced strong opposition to the proposed P200 Daily Across-the-Board Wage Increase Act, arguing that it would severely harm businesses, particularly SMEs, and the overall economy. The groups, including the Employers' Confederation of the Philippines and the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, warned that the blanket wage hike would increase costs for businesses, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers. They also expressed concerns that the bill does not address the needs of the informal sector, which comprises 70 percent of the Philippine workforce.
A coalition of 10 significant business organizations voiced their strong opposition to the proposed P200 Daily Across-the-Board Wage Increase Act, which was recently approved by the House Committee on Labor and Employment.
While the groups acknowledged the importance of improving workers’ welfare, they pointed out that the proposed wage increase would disproportionately burden employers. “The mandatory wage hike will place a heavy financial strain on employers, particularly in industries where labor costs represent a significant portion of their expenses. In many cases, businesses will be forced to pass these increased costs on to consumers in the form of higher prices for goods and services, they said in a letter to House labor and employment panel chair Rep. Juan Fidel Felipe Nograles.

P200 Wage Hike Bill Approved in House, Benefits Only Minimum Wage EarnersThe House of Representatives approved a P200 wage hike bill for private sector workers on February 3, 2023, but with a key change: the increase will only benefit minimum wage earners. The bill, HB No. 11376, was approved on second reading and retains the P200 wage increase amount proposed earlier. However, it excludes workers beyond the minimum wage bracket. The measure also exempts Barangay Micro Business Enterprises (BMBEs) from the wage hike. Small enterprises can avail of incentives from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to assist with compliance. Deputy Speaker Raymond Democrito Mendoza urged President Marcos to certify the bill as urgent to expedite its passage, as the earliest the House can vote on third reading is June 2, after the May 12 mid-term elections.
