Backburns have been put in place with the aim of stopping the fire before it moves from scrubland into the Barkly's open plains, which are some of the NT's most productive cattle country.
The Barkly Highway — the only bitumen road between the Northern Territory and Queensland — reopened late on Monday after closing due to dangerous fire conditions on Saturday.
"To affect this strategy, the Barkly Highway was closed for three days to allow for backburning … we really needed to take that proactive action to de-risk this situation.""Three and a half years ago, Bushfires NT had two permanent staff based in Tennant Creek ... the government scrapped those positions — two very important conditions that have a key role to play when it comes to planning and prevention," he said.
Ms Moss said in parliament that Bushfires NT had received additional funding from the NT government, including the construction of a new headquarters at Acacia Hills and $2.5 million in ongoing funding to support aerial firefighting services.
