Victoria has agreed to set up a public transport safety committee as the union representing bus drivers calls for major safety improvements.

Bus drivers who say they’re working in dangerous and increasingly violent conditions are using electrification of the state’s public bus network to push for major workplace reforms.

The Victorian government is tendering for seven new bus contracts in Melbourne, which will be responsible for a fleet of up to 625 buses and cover as much as 30 per cent of the network. “We urge operators to heed our call for direct involvement and work collaboratively to address the glaring issues of fatigue, stress, and safety,” he said.“We must foster an environment that ensures the well-being of bus drivers and the passengers they serve.”
