Over 70,000 people attending Burning Man have been told to shelter in place after a massive rainstorm turned the Black Rock Desert into a muddy mess.

The annual festival is held on a dry lake in northwestern Nevada, and is guided by ten principles including civic responsibility, radical self-reliance and leaving no trace.

Organisers have warned attendees to conserve their food and water supplies, as it is currently unknown when they’ll be able to leave the event. “Do not travel to Black Rock City! Access to the city is closed for the remainder of the event, and you will be turned around,” the organisers said on Twitter.

“If you are in BRC please shelter in place and stay safe … Check on your campmates and neighbours to make sure they’re OK, and help them as needed. Take advantage of a moment of calm to connect with campmates and hunker down.” 60,000 people stuck at burning man and it’s not looking good. There is limited food and water and toilets and showers beginning to fail. They need at least four days for it to dry out as it’s too muddy to leave. They are stuck.
