Indigenous singer-songwriter DeeDee Austin, 16, was in Truro recently for the filming of the "Buried Truth" music video. - Chelsey GouldTRURO, N.S. — In Truro’s Civic Square, a grand piano burns. From the windows of the library are silhouettes of children against orange light.

“Buried Truth” is one of Austin’s more favourite, but also serious songs. She wrote it for her great-grandmother, who was a residential school survivor, and after hearing about the more than a thousand unmarked graves discovered out west last year. “It's rewarding to get people to open their eyes and open their ears and kind of realize what's been going on for the last few years,” said Austin. “I don't even have words to really explain it. It's just such a sensitive topic and it definitely means a lot to me.”

Grandparents Glenda and Jim Osborne recall her being four years old and deciding she wanted to take the microphone and join the band during a seniors’ Christmas event. Now, they joke about having gone from retirement to “being roadies.” They knew she was good, but it has been “next level” to see professionals praising her. At the Rise Again Concert in Pomquet, country music star George Canyon said in the green room after, “You made my eyes sweat.”
