Burnaby RCMP ask public to avoid area near 1st and Gilmore avenues during prolonged police incident.

An incident in Burnaby's Willingdon Heights area drew a heavy police response over many hours Thursday.

Witnesses said Burnaby RCMP were on scene with members of the Lower Mainland RCMP Emergency Response Team in the area of 1st and Gilmore avenues Thursday afternoon and that police had been on site in the area since 10 a.m. An RCMP member with "Negotiator" on their jacket was also on scene as well as a tactical armoured vehicle. The neighbourhood comprises mostly light industrial businesses but there was one residential home that police were focused on. The area was closed to the public.

"There is no indication of further risk to the public," a Burnaby RCMP tweet said, but no further details were released as of 7 p.m. Thursday. We are currently dealing with a police incident in the area of 1st Avenue and Gilmore Avenue.Please avoid the area.@AM730Traffic @CityNewsTraffic @CBCTraffic pic.twitter.com/6YBTcJCIEH
