Bureau’s success against Sabah illegal gold mining cited

“Crimes against the environment and the ecosystem have far reaching impacts. Illegal activities in forest reserves and seas can cause substantial harm to humans,” said WWF-Malaysia Conservation Director, Dr Henry Chan.

It cited the bureau’s recent exercise that culminated in discovering illegal gold mining and logging in Sabah and in other states, a positive sign that a centralised system can be effective in tackling not just wildlife crime but crimes against the environment as a whole. Collaboration between the Wildlife Crime Bureau and environmental agencies through joint operations such as the Ops Khazanah is exemplary and should be continued, WWF added.
