Bungguls are the main attraction at Garma Festival, in north-east Arnhem Land. But this year is the first festival without Gumatj trailblazer Yunupiŋu.

Grounded in Yolngu culture, Maryanne Yunupiŋu has been dancing in bungguls since she was a toddler. While her father was a master of ceremonies and keeper of song lines, she says cultural knowledge can only be passed down by a matriarch."My mum was my guide through bunggul," she said,

One of the dances Ms Yunupiŋu performed was the story of Ganbulapula, an ancestor who was searching for honey.Bees and honey are sacred body art designs that represent cultural knowledge that links the people with the land and sea. But there is another process happening that untrained eyes in the audience might not see. The bunggul grounds are like a university for the next generation of leaders.
