Bulls & Bears: April is the most important month in sports

Major League Baseball and its 162\u002Dgame schedule is now officially underway. Still basking in the afterglow of the World Baseball Classic, MLB rolled out one of the most bullish opening days in its history, with all 30 teams playing on Thursday.

Add in the NFL Draft from April 27 to 29 and the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals April 11 to 19 and the month is arguably the king of sport business, not only here in North America but globally.At US$19 billion and counting, the National Football League is well on its way to becoming the US$25 billion industry it aspires to become by 2027 under the leadership of commissioner Roger Goodell.

Part of the momentum that has seen the NFL almost triple its annual revenues over the 16.5 years of Goodell’s commissionership has come from the biggest national media deals in league history, including significant growth from Sunday Night Football on NBC, Monday Night Football on ABC/ESPN and the invitation for Amazon Prime to join the NFL broadcast family with exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football.

The fact that the NFL can do literally whatever it wants, however, doesn’t mean it should cavalierly sink its teeth into every single chance it gets to expand the value of its properties. The concept of flexing Thursday Night Football, for example, is not exactly a fan-friendly initiative, especially for the substantive legion of travelling fans that would be caught out by games moving from Sunday to Thursday at the last minute.
