The storm, driven by an arctic blast, brought freezing temperatures as far south as the Mexican border, leaving scores dead nationwide including 34 in Buffalo and surrounding Erie County and one in Niagara County.Buffalo woman Carolyn Eubanks, who relied on an oxygen machine, collapsed after losing electricity at a time when emergency workers were unable to respond to calls, her son Antwaine Parker told The Buffalo News."I'm begging her, 'Mom, just stand up.
Mr Parker and his stepbrother knocked on nearby doors, seeking help until a stranger, David Purdy, answered and helped them carry the 63-year-old inside to try, in vain, to revive her."I done it as respectful as I could," he said.Twenty-seven-year-old Timothy Murphy died after snow covered a furnace and sent carbon monoxide into his Lockport home, according to the Niagara County sheriff's office.
Monique Alexander, who was 52, was found buried in snow after going out in the storm for unknown reasons. Twenty-two-year-old Anndel Taylor died in her car after becoming stuck on her way home from work, her family told television station WSOC-TV.As a deep freeze eased into milder weather on Wednesday, and outages were slowly repaired, New York National Guard members knocked on doors in Buffalo suburbs.
