Veteran baseball analyst Buck Martinez is set to return to the Blue Jays broadcast booth nearly a year after he stepped aside to receive cancer treatment.
Sportsnet announced Martinez’s return while unveiling the Jays’ TV schedule for the upcoming season. Martinez will rejoin play-by-play announcer Dan Shulman in the booth, while Joe Siddall will serve as game analyst for select series.
Studio coverage will be led by host Jamie Campbell with analysis from Siddall and Caleb Joseph. Hazel Mae will continue as an on-field reporter, alongside Arden Zwelling — who replaces Arash Madani, not included in Sportsnet’s announcement. The Jays open their regular season March 30 with a three-game series against the Cardinals in St. Louis. The home opener at the newly renovated Rogers Centre is April 11 against the Detroit Tigers.
Sportsnet will also have exclusive Jays spring training coverage from Dunedin, Fla., with all 16 home dates available on TV and streaming platforms. Spring training games start Feb. 25. Jays radio voice Ben Wagner tweeted that there will also be play-by-play of every spring road game. Martinez, a former catcher, played 17 years in the majors, including six for the Jays starting in 1981. He began broadcasting as a colour commentator for Jays games on TSN in 1987, and called games for American networks before joining Sportsnet’s team in 2010.He returned to the booth briefly in July“I want to thank you all for the signs, the prayers,” he told the Rogers Centre crowd in his first game back. “There’s no doubt that all of your good words helped me get through this tough time.
