'If you are lucky enough to come across a small owl, give it space — they can be quite tame, but you will cause them less stress if watched from a distance,' Bruce Mactavish advises.

Technically, it is not even a mouse, but it is a vole — the meadow vole to be precise.
The sense of hearing in owls is many times sharper than ours. Their eyes are large, with light-gathering pupils allowing for excellent nighttime vision. Around human habitation, they notice wildlife we are hardly aware of, such as the house mice and, yes, the dreaded rat. The opportunistic rodents also find bird seed around bird feeders. Having a bird feeder by no means guarantees you will attract house mice or rats, but it does happen.I have no easy solutions for controlling rodents at bird feeders. But, if you put out poison or lethal traps, place them in a location where wild birds, cats and dogs cannot reach.
Northern saw-whet owl is just one of the two species of small owl in the province. The slightly larger, but less often encountered, boreal owl is out there in the woods as well. It differs from the saw-whet owl in that is has a thin black border surrounding its face with fine white spots instead of streaks on the forehead.
