Brittany Higgins extended an olive branch to her former employer Senator Linda Reynolds and her chief of staff Fiona Brown, in her first comments after the judgment.
Brittany Higgins, the former Liberal staffer who was raped by her colleague Bruce Lehrmann in Parliament House in 2019, said it was “time to heal” now her assailant’s high-profile defamation action against Network 10 was over.
The action against Ms Higgins relates to an Instagram post on July 4 and another on Twitter on July 20, 2023, while the action against Mr Sharaz relates to two tweets in 2022.Senator Reynolds last week said Justice Lee’s judgment “set the record straight” about her involvement, and rejected “the demonstrably false narrative that has dominated headlines and ruined lives and careers”.
The former defence minister added that because Justice Lee’s findings were not binding on her defamation claims against Ms Higgins and Mr Sharaz, she “remained committed to fully vindicating my reputation”.In a statement posted on X late on Saturday, Ms Higgins said: “My perception and feelings about what happened in the days and weeks after my rape are different from . I deeply regret we have not yet found common ground.
Ms Higgins thanked Justice Lee for his “trauma informed approach” and recognition that victims’ reactions can “vary wildly”.
